In the world of retail, every project is an opportunity to create something remarkable. MJ Consulting recently had the privilege of being a key player in yet another exciting venture – the £2 million refit of WH Smith’s flagship travel store at Birmingham Airport. The grand opening on 16th November marked the culmination of months of hard work and collaboration with Bond Project Services and Brookerflynn Architects Ltd.

MJC played a crucial role in the project by providing essential structural design and consultancy services for the retail unit, which encompassed comprehensive site surveys. Collaborating with Bond Project Services and Brookerflynn Architects Ltd, the team at MJC actively contributed to the redevelopment of the store, creating a distinctive destination for travellers navigating through Birmingham Airport.

A 6,000sqft travel store

The newly revamped store is not just an ordinary retail space; it’s a sprawling 6,000sq ft travel haven. Boasting the title of WH Smith’s largest travel store to date, the outlet offers a diverse range of products and services to cater to the needs of modern-day travellers.

Dubbed as the flagship store, this WH Smith outlet is not only large in size but also in its offerings. Beyond the conventional travel essentials, the store houses a health and beauty section and a tech zone, adding an extra layer of convenience and variety for customers.

What makes this store truly special is its bespoke design, drawing inspiration from the local architecture of Birmingham. The lengthened LED fascia ensures the store is not only visually striking but also easy to navigate for travellers. The design focuses on providing good visibility, helping customers quickly locate their desired categories, view promotional offers, make purchases, and check out efficiently.

In addition to aesthetics, the store also prioritises sustainability and environmental practices. Energy-efficient systems, including food chillers with energy-saving doors, contribute to an eco-friendlier operation, aligning with the growing demand for responsible business practices.

The successful completion of this £2 million refit project underscores MJC’s commitment to excellence in structural consultancy. As the travel retail landscape evolves, we are proud to contribute to projects that not only meet the needs of today’s travellers but also set the standard for the future.

Congratulations to WH Smith and all the collaborators involved in making this flagship travel store a reality. It stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and a deep appreciation for local identity in the world of travel retail.
