“This was one of the most delicate projects we’ve worked on - structurally supporting a listed ceiling without touching it. The over-roof design allowed us to do exactly that, and it’s something we’re really proud of.”
Existing venue fabric, production loads and limited downtime.

What the brief was — and what we delivered.
MJC acted as lead consultant on a sensitive roof project at Leeds Grand Theatre, protecting one of the UK's most significant historic plaster ceilings.
Heritage constraint
The Grade II* listed theatre has an ornate ceiling with a high level of Historic England protection. Essential roof works had to proceed without direct disturbance or downward pressure on the ceiling below.
MJC's solution
- Design of a bespoke over-roof structure above the existing building envelope.
- Support for the existing roof and delicate plaster ceiling from above.
- Safe contractor access for external works.
- Coordination with heritage consultants, contractors and the venue team.
Outcome
The over-roof was installed and removed without incident, allowing critical repair works while leaving the protected ceiling untouched.
The work, on site.
